On the Beach (1959) 4 Stars

On the Beach

One of the great ones. There's a nuclear exchange which destroys all life in the Northern Hemisphere. As the radiation cloud spreads, life is slowly ending in the Southern Hemisphere. An American submarine crew is in Melbourne as a Morse code signal from San Francisco is heard. The movie depicts the beauty of ordinary life and is haunting in its portrayal of people's calm acceptance of their fate, as life itself winds down. Don't miss it.
