Gods and Monsters

A stunning performance by Ian McKellen drives this compelling "speculative diorama" about the later years of British-born filmmaker James Whale, the director of "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein" who dazzled '30s Hollywood with his talent and scandalized it with his openly gay lifestyle. Brendan Fraser is a gardener who becomes the older man's art model and confidante, and Lynn Redgrave plays Whale's devoted housekeeper.
